Exploring Canada: The Voyageurs

This is the first coin in what is possibly one of the most exciting series recently released by the Royal Canadian Mint. This series highlights significant milestones and eras in Canadian exploration throughout history. It also aims to capture the joy of adventure and discovery, esteeming the bold explorers, the pioneering people whose thirst for the unknown have shaped Canadian identity. This particular coin boasts a thrilling depiction of “voyageurs”, Canadians who faced both adventure and peril throughout the duration of their careers, transporting fur by canoe during Canada’s industrious fur trade era. “Voyageur” literally means “traveller” in French, as more often than not, voyageurs were French-Canadian. As Canada began to expand, the need for fur trade between settlements expanded, demanding excursions along unchartered lakes and rivers, and through unknown forests. For this reason, voyageurs were often accompanied by a First Nations guide; this was so often the case, that it is rare to see a depiction of a voyageur without a First Nations comrade. Voyageurs are fabled folk heroes in French Canada, where their lives and feats have been celebrated in folklore and music. The image on this coin by Canadian artist John Mantha depicts five men riding tumultuous rapids in a birch-bark canoe, as a First Nations oarsman guides the voyageurs on this exhilarating journey. This image attempts to convey the many regular perils in the lives of these travellers. This stunning $15 coin is struck in two-thirds of an ounce of 99.99% fine silver, boasting a stunning matte-proof finish. This is an excellent way to begin collecting this exciting 10-coin series; alternatively, it would make a bold addition to any collection of historical Canadian silver coins.
